Livestreaming your DJ set: a guide for beginner DJs

Are you a DJ looking to get your music out there? If you are getting serious about promoting yourself as a DJ, then why not consider livestreaming your next set? Here’s a guide on why livestreaming your DJ set can be beneficial and how to get started.

Why should you livestream?

The number one reason to livestream your music is that it provides you with an opportunity to share your art and sound with people from all over the world. It also gives you an opportunity to reach potential new fans or promoters that may not have heard about you before, and to build a connection with people who are watching the stream from home, as they can interact directly with you through chat or comments during the performance. This creates a truly unique experience for both the performer and the listener.

How to prepare to go live

When preparing for streaming, there are a few things you should consider doing first. First, make sure that all your equipment is in good working order – nothing kills a good session faster than technical difficulties! Second, prepare your playlist by rehearsing beforehand so that you can perform to your best capacity during the broadcast. Third, get ready from a software standpoint with your favourite DJ software, a virtual audio device and a streaming software (this article might help!). Finally, make sure that any visuals you plan on using during the stream are ready to go before showtime (if applicable).

What equipment do you need?

At minimum, a computer (or laptop) capable of running video-streaming software such as OBS is necessary. Next, a DJ controller that you’re comfortable with and already using, such as the DJControl Inpulse 500! You don’t need to buy an external audio interface or another computer to stream your sets, but as you get more comfortable with going live, an interface could be useful for connecting microphones or instruments into the computer so that they can be streamed out live along with music playing from other sources (e.g., Serato, DJUCED). Last but not least, decent internet connectivity is key as well – without proper internet speed/bandwidth, it’ll be difficult to stream out high quality audio and video content consistently throughout the entire performance.

Livestreaming your DJ set has many advantages; it’s an easy way to increase the reach of your music while engaging directly with fans in real-time. With just a few pieces of equipment and some preparation beforehand, anyone can begin livestreaming their performances.
